Background And Childhood

Elie Saab was born in July 4, 1964 in Damour, a suburb of Beirut, Lebanon. He was only six years old, when he first showed signs of his future flair. His father was a wood merchant. In 1976, his home city of Damour was destroyed. As a result, his family moved closer to Beirut. Saab taught himself to sew using his mother old clothes in his designs and showcasing on his sisters.

His Career In Lebanon

In 1982, at the age of eighteen, Saab launched a fashion label in Beirut with fifteen workers. At that time, he focused on designing couture for brides. He used high quality lace, fabrics, crystals, pearls, silk threads and intricate embroidery. Soon his reputation spread. Elie went from simply dressing the women in his neighborhood to dressing high society women.

His Career out Lebanon

In 1997, he turned into the first non-Italian designer who was included in Italian Camera Nazionale della Moda as a member. Also Elie Saab displayed his first clothing collection outside his nation in Rome at the same year.

In 1998, he had a fashion show in Monaco. Princess Stephanie of Monaco attended the show. Moreover, in 1999 Queen Rania of Jordan wore one of his designs while she ascended the Jordanian throne.
In 2002, he became a quick talk of the world. Especially when Halle Berry wore his design when she won an ‘Oscar award for Best Actress’. This made Elie Saab a huge success because he was the first Lebanese designer to dress an actress for the ‘Oscars’.

In 2003, he became a member correspondent of ‘Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture’. Furthermore in the same year he had his first haute couture line in Paris.

In 2010, he had dressed around 102 celebrities from around the world for major international events including : Princess Beatrice of York, Princess Margaretha of Liechtenstein, Beyonce, Angelina Jolie, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg, Emma Watson, Princess Madeleine of Sweden, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Princess Claire of Luxembourg and Katy Perry.

 

Designer of the day: L’Wren Scott

If you are a fashion lover, then you have with no doubt, heard about a fashion designer called L’Wren Scott. In fact, her real name is Laura “Luann” Bambrough, but she chose L’Wren Scott as her professional name. This designer was adored and acknowledged worldwide by all the ladies who loved owning designer clothes and women who admired a well-tailored outfit.

Background

Scott was raised in Roy, Utah by Ivan and Lula Bambrough, her adoptive parents. Moreover, she was born on April 28, 1964. Luann was her nickname, she was known for having a tall posture and because of that, she had to sue her own outfits. As a result, Luann learned about fabric quality and style construction when she was only 12 years old. Furthermore, Luann graduated from Roy High School in 1982.

Scott as a stylist

Due to Scott’s height, she started a career as a model in Paris. However, he ditched that, and moved in the 90s to California and started to try to establish herself as a stylist. In 2009, she styled important and famous stars such as Madonna, and following her is Julia Roberts in 2011 along with Tom Hanks. Moreover, Scott styled costumes for films such as  Diabolique (1996 remake), Eyes Wide Shut, Ocean’s Thirteen, in addition to Shine a Light, a documentary by Martin Scorsese about The Rolling Stones, with Mick Jagger.

In addition to clothing, L’Wren Scott designed everything that has to do with outfit accessories, such as: makeup, perfume, handbags, shoes, and eyeglasses.

“I like a very sexy silhouette, and I like to feel like when you put something on, you zip yourself into it, and you’re secure in there.” This was her motivation to design very comfortable, yet stylish clothes. In addition to that, due to her fans’ love, they developed “L’Wrenisms”; a set of styling tips. One of them was: Wearing a nude shoe to elongate the leg. Which is still used by women everyday.

Calvin Klein Biography

Childhood & Early Life

Calvin Klein was born on November 19, 1942 in Bronx, New York. Ever since he was a child, he intently watched his grandmother who was a seamstress. As such, he soon developed a love for sewing. Klein spent hours sketching designs and sewing fashionable outfits. After school, he studied in Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and graduated in 1962.

Career

Klein’s first step in the professional world of fashion came in 1962. as an apprentice worker for Dan Millstein in cloak and suit house. Meanwhile, he designed for other New York shops as well.

In 1968, he collaborated with , Barry Schwartz, to establish his own company, Calvin Klein. it was a coat shop.

By 1971, Calvin Klein Company had grown dramatically. The establishment traded not just in coats, but sportswear, classic blazers, and lingerie in its women’s collection.

From a modest start-up of $10,000, the company’s revenues escalated to $30 million by 1977. At that time, the company had licenses for scarves, shoes, belts, furs, sunglasses, sheets, cosmetics, jean, and menswear. Furthermore, the Klein Empire became one of the leading fashion labels.
By the early 1980s, his humble store had turned into a huge empire, with more than 12000 stores across six countries: Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.
 In addition, the decades of 1990s were dominated by his highly popular perfume lines.

Klein has been honored by various fashion councils from the world over.
He received an award from the Councils of Fashion Designs of America in 1981, 1983, and 1993.

In 1983; Klein was listed on the International Best Dressed List.
In 1996; he made it to the list of 25 most influential Americans.
In 2002; Calvin Klein sold his company, Calvin Klein Inc.

Personal Life & Legacy

In 1964, Calvin Klein married Jayne Centre. They had a daughter; Marci. They divorced in 1974.

 In 1986, he married his assistant Kelly Rector. This union too wasn’t successful for long. The couple separated in 1996 and legally divorced in 2006.

Pierre Cardin

Pierre Cardin is a French fashion designer who was born in Italy. Moreover, he was the first designer to introduce “bubble dress” in 1954. Furthermore, on October 16, 2009, Pierre Cardin was nominated Goodwill Ambassador of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

During his first years after he moved to Paris, Cardin jumped for job to job. Moreover, he found a job in “the Paquin fashion house” that belonged to the famous dress designer Jeanne Paquin. However, she died before Cardin’s time there. Cardin moved from Paquin to the Schiaperelli fashion house that same year.

Pierre is known for helping to design Dior’s “New Look,” which was intended to emphasize femininity in women’s clothing after the period of women taking on traditionally masculine roles during World War II.

In 190, after working for Dior, Pierre left to start his own line. He first started by designing outfits for stage productions, and after that, he immediately built a client base. Paloma, the daughter of the well-known artist, Pablo Picasso, was born on April 19, 1949, in Vallauris, France. Moreover, in the year 1986, she was working on her own, being a costume and accessory designer. Soon after, the jewelry she designed, caught the attention of some fashion critics, who said that they were exceptional and well made. Moreover, this reputation, got her a new job: a jewelry designer for Zolotas, Yves Saint Laurent and Tiffany and Co. after a while, Paloma released her own line, making perfume, and accessories for designers.

In her brand, she created perfumes and jewelry for fashion designers including an eponymous scent and Mon Rouge, a dramatic scarlet lipstick that became her trademark.

Personal Life

At first she was married to Argentinean businessman Rafael Lopez-Cambil for 21 years. However, soon after their divorce, she got married to French doctor Eric Thevenet.

Giorgio Armani

Childhood & Early Life

Giorgio Armani was born on July 11, 1934 in the Italian town of Piacenza. His father was a shipping manager and he grew up in a humble background.

After high school, he enrolled in the Department of Medicine at the University of Milan, but left after three years to join the army in 1953.

Career

He found a job as a window dresser in a departmental store. After that, as a salesman in the menswear department, so he learned about fashion designing and marketing. He joined the Nino Cerutti company in the mid-1960’s as a designer for menswear. At the same time, he also sent his designs to various other garments manufacturers.

During the late 1960’s he met Sergio Galeotti, who inspired him to open his own office in 1973.
All through the early 1970’s, Armani freelanced for a number of better known fashion houses like Allegri, Hilton, Gibo, etc.
His success let him create his own label. Along with Galeotti, he formed the Giorgio Armani S.p.A in Milan in 1975. He presented a range of ready-to-wear collection for both men and women in1976.
In 1979, he founded the Giorgio Armani Corporation. He introduced several product lines under his Giorgio Armani brand: Le Collezioni, Underwear and Swimwear, and accessories.
In the 1980’s, the company introduced Armani Junior, Armani Jeans, and Emporio Armani lines.
Armani also developed a close relationship with Hollywood over time by designing costumes for over 100 films.

Major Works

His first biggest achievement was the founding of his company Giorgio Armani.
He opened the U.S branch, Giorgio Armani Corporation in New York.
He also found great success as a fashion designer for movie stars.

The Neiman Marcus Award in 1979.
The Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award from Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) in 1987.

Armani was so busy with his career that he did not have time for women. He is very close to his siblings and their children.

In addition, the couple decided to have a baby together. In 1984, Tyler Alexandra Gallagher Ellis, their daughter was born. Unfortunately, she was born only 18 months before her father’s death.

Born on May 2, 1955, in Reggio Calabria, Italy, designer Donatella Versace is one of best known names in fashion today. She is the sister of the late designer Gianni Versace. Donatella and Gianni learned about designing from their mother, who had a dressmaking business.

Versace began developing her trademark look as a teenager. Moreover, Donatella attended university in Florence for a time. However, she eventually reunited with Gianni to support his clothing business.

Gianni Versace started his own fashion company in Milan in 1978. Together with Donatella, who was right there by his side.  she played an important role in orchestrating many Versace fashion shows.
